Blog #1

I found that when people form their opinions about important topics they tend not do research the opposing side.  To form a solid argument for or against anything you would first need to know what the other side thinks so that you do not misquote someone or misrepresent what they believe.   It is my opinion that if you know and address both sides then it would be nearly impossible for someone to oppose you.  In order to do what I have stated above you need to know how to summarize.   Up to this point everyone has told me to summarize but no one has taught me how to summarize.  In the reading I feel like I have a better understanding of what it really mean to summarize.  One aspect of this that I found particularly helpful is quoting.  I always thought that you would need to quote or summarize their entire argument but I now understand that this is not necessary.  You only need to quote or summarize the section of the opposition’s argument that you are refuting in order to help make your point.  I have to say that this is the aspect of writing that I have struggled with most.  I end up arguing against myself because I list too much or get to in depth with my summarization.
